Every Friday I join Lisa-Jo over at The Gypsy Mama for a quick, no edit writing topic, and we each watch, often in surprise, at what appears beneath our tapping fingers in the short span of five minutes. Today, in honor of her birthday, we are going to share our thoughts on Older.

Let’s put those fingers to the keys and tap out our own unique rhythm!

Five Minute Friday: Older

Yes, as much as we ladies hate to admit it, we are getting older.

What’s that old saying?

Oh, yes. It’s “You’re not just getting older, you’re getting wiser.”

Right. I think that is supposed to be comforting.

I have to say, that what comes to mind is this:

I am getting older.

I am getting saggier.

I am getting bulge-ier.

I am getting wrinkle-ier.

But wait a minute. We went over this ground in great detail a couple of weeks ago, as we all shared about beauty.

Hmmmm. Beliefs can run as deep as the roots on those nasty weeds in our front yards, and can be just as hard to dispel.

Why is it we don’t claim the hard earned wisdom that is ours to share with the younger ladies?

We are wiser.

Our wrinkles show it.

Our graying hair shows it.

Our more square-ish bodies show it.

We must embrace this wisdom, rejoice in it, revel in it, give it the honorable seat at the table as opposed to chasing after the emptiness of eternal youth.

I mean, really, do any of us miss the sometimes shallow, empty, lost, lonely, foolish youthful selves we once were?

What we miss, I think, is the pretty package.

But is that what we really treasure about ourselves, and what we want to have our children, especially our daughters, treasure about themselves?

Relax. Be yourself. Be the jewel you have been ground, tumbled and polished to be, and let that beautiful inner light shine!

  2. This was beautiful! Thank you for sharing! I completely agree, owning the wisdom we gain over the years is a beautiful thing! And when a woman owns what she has been given, her beauty will never ever fade! Some of the most beautiful women I know are also some of the wisest, and most God-fearing women I’ve ever had the blessing to meet. Thank you for sharing your heart today!

  3. Thank you ladies for bringing more light, joy, wisdom and smiles into my day!

  4. As much as I miss my waist line from my twenties I wouldn’t go back! Life is richer the wiser I become and more comfortable in my own skin I grow. Thanks for sharing words of wisdom!

  5. Lovely. I particularly like your last line: “Be the jewel you have been ground, tumbled and polished to be, and let that beautiful inner light shine!”

I think that all too often we forget that it’s hard work becoming a beautiful jewel! We have to let the Lord sand us down and tumble off all the rough patches before we can be polished. And then there’s the constant cleaning necessary to ourselves sparkling.

Thank you for this reminder. :)

    • So that’s what has made me go “ow ow ow!” all these years. :)
And the polishing…I feel like I live my life at the “Master Jeweler’s”!
      It is all good.

  6. Loved your post. I have been reminding myself that although I am aging, I have an entire group of young people that I run with (my children, and those in ministry) that are looking to me for wisdom. Thanks for stopping by my blog today!
