A thrifty DIY investment that pays dividends

thrifty diy investment

What we wanted in our recently purchased home was leather furniture that looked like a million bucks but only cost a few hundred.

Being the bargain hunters we are, we searched Craigslist and thrift stores for months before finding a set that was well-made, comfortable, well cared for, and was within budget.

Since we had owned leather furniture previously, we knew part of the key to keeping it looking  great was to clean and condition it before moving it into the house.

We spent about seventy dollars on a quality leather product and quite a few hours getting the pieces looking their best.

For us, this investment of time and money will pay off, especially since we’ll have plenty of great seating for ourselves and our guests in our living room, and we didn’t go into debt to buy the furniture.

Doing projects on your home can be a thrifty DIY investment that pays dividends, too.

You just have to pick and choose wisely what you do and when and how you do it, and make sure you have the skills to do it safely and well.

For instance, we knew when we moved into our new house we were going to re-do the kitchen.

Obviously there are folks who like the 1980s look of dark mauve walls and equally dark oak cabinets, but we don’t count ourselves among them.

I know you want to take a moment to savor that look.

Go ahead. I’ll wait. :-)

Since a complete remodel was not yet in the budget, we decided to do a facelift that included paint, new hardware and hinges, a new faucet, and moving a countertop.

I invite you to join me at Engaged Marriage where I share about this project and the sometimes surprising dividends you can earn from your DIY investments.
